My interest in Linux started with boredom and frustration. My laptop often froze while I was doing schoolwork, and replacing or upgrading it was not an easy option.
I first moved from Windows 10 to Windows 7 because I was looking for something lighter. It worked well enough for a while, although several drivers did not fit the laptop properly.
I also became curious about changing the Windows appearance. A friend liked experimenting with themes, so I tried it too. Some changes went further than I understood, and I eventually experienced the blue screen I had read warnings about.
Trying Ubuntu
I remembered a teacher mentioning another operating system that was friendly for learning networking and programming. After reading that Ubuntu was a reasonable starting point for Linux beginners, I installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS in 2016.
The first thing that caught my attention was not programming. It was customization.
I changed wallpapers, moved the dock, adjusted icon sizes, and looked for ways to make the desktop resemble macOS. At one point a classmate asked whether I was using an Apple operating system. It was only Linux with a macOS-like theme, but I enjoyed the moment anyway.
Customization kept me curious long enough to explore other parts of the system. I gradually learned to:
- install applications from the terminal;
- look for Linux alternatives to Windows software;
- edit images with GIMP;
- search for solutions when an application or configuration failed.
When I could not repair a problem, my answer was sometimes to reinstall the system. That was not an efficient solution, but it was part of how I learned at the time.
Working with Limited Hardware
I later tried Lubuntu because it used fewer resources and did not need heavy desktop effects. That mattered on a laptop whose hard drive was already noisy and whose parts had not been replaced for years.
The experience did not mean that changing the operating system could repair old hardware. An SSD or additional memory could address different bottlenecks, but those upgrades cost money. Linux gave me a practical way to keep learning with the machine I already had.
What I Learned
The laptop problem was small compared with many other problems, but it changed how I responded to limitations. Waiting for the machine to become faster was not enough, so I started looking for alternatives and trying them myself.
That process was not systematic or always successful. It was mostly curiosity, experimentation, and many mistakes. Still, the limitation introduced me to Linux and made me more comfortable learning outside what I was taught in class.
Sometimes a constraint does not disappear. It can still become a reason to adapt, learn, and use what is available more creatively.
